According to my friend Chris (who hears it from his friend Kristen), there will be two seperate memorial services for the late Prof. Petersen; one for Anthropology Majors and one for the entirity of the school. As soon as I get more detail on the subject, I will post it.

UVM In The Headlines [16 Aug 2005|08:29pm]

helgawurm
I just noticed this article in my local newspaper, The Standard Times, on Monday August 15, 2005:

"UVM Professor killed in Amazon

SAO PAULO, Brazil - A University of Vermont anthropology professor on a research trip to Brazil was killed Saturday while he was being robbed in a small rainforest town near the Amazon River, an American Embassy spokesman said yesterday.

James Petersen, 51, of Salisbury, VT., died toward the end of the confrontation in a restaurant in the town of Iranduba, said the spokesman, John Wilcock. Iranduba is about 1,650 miles northwest of Sao Paulo.

Three suspects were taken into custody, according to CBN radio. Wilcock said he could not confirm that information.

UVM Provost John Bramley said Petersen, who was with colleagues when the robbery happened, was shot and died a short time later."

I'm not sure if anyone else had heard anything about this, as it's news to me, so I decided to post the article. I'm not sure if UVM plans to hold a memorial service or anything, but if I get word, I will let you know.

Opening Weekend... [10 Aug 2005|05:46pm]

helgawurm
I've just got my room assignment, so keep and eye out for it in your
webmail over the next couple of days.  Also, they've finally
posted some of the activities for Opening Weeked 2005. Friday's and
Saturday's schedules don't really apply to our class unless you play a
sport or something so I'll just leave those days out. If you really
want me to post them, I will. But later...

Sunday August 8th 2005:

  • 2:00-5:00p

    • Explore Burlington (free shuttle to UMall, Church St. & Box Stores)

  • 4:30-5:30p

    • Varsity Athelete Orientation (Gymnastics Area, Patrick Gym)

  • 7:30-8:00p

    • Floor Meeting With Your RA (See RA For Location)

  • 8:00-9:00p

    • Class of 2009 Twilight Induction (Main Green)

  • 9:30p

    • Outdoor Movie: Not Yet Listed (Main Green/Rain Site: CC Theater)

When Week of Welcome posts a schedule, I'll be sure to get that up. The link for the Opening Weekend schedule can be found here.

ps: If anyone is in the area of Foxboro, MA this weekend and you
appreciate good music, you should check out the DCI (Drum Corps
International) Quarter-, Semi- and Finals this Thursday, Friday and
Saturday at Gilette Stadium. Tickets are still available for all three
days and must be purchased at the door. For more information click here.

Room Assignments [08 Aug 2005|12:10pm]

helgawurm
Hey, Everyone!

I just checked my webmail and I had received and e-mail from Residential Life. I deleted it before I decided to post this but I'm pretty good at paraphrasing. The basic jist was that the room assignments have been pretty much figured out so far. Students will be receiving (on a staggered basis) e-mail notification in a short time announcing what their room assignment is and give the name of their roommate(s), if applicable. It also said not to worry if someone else has gotten their e-mail already and you have not, seeing as they are sending out the e-mails in random order and staggering the sendings to prevent the server from becoming flooded and crashing.

Alright, Let's Try This Again... [02 Aug 2005|04:20pm]

helgawurm
Okay, after many months of inactivity, I'm going to try and save this here community. So here goes...

Hi! I'm you super friendly MOD Julie. I made this community with hopes of meeting new people from UVM (specifically, those in the class of 2008). If you seem to fit those two meager requisites, feel free to join.

Every now and again, I'll be back to post about anything and anything; classes, upcoming events, recent events, sports scores, whatever. I'll try to post at least once a month to keep things interesting.

If anyone else has something to say, they can post, too. I won't have very many rules about what isn't allowed: I'm not into censorship and that whole lot. Mostly, I'll just ask that anyone decides to post keep vulgar language to a minimum. I'm not going to delete every single little swear (especially since I don't see anything wrong with the words themselves - mostly just how they are used) but if someone lets out a string of pointless obscenities, consider them gone.

I'll be back in a week or so to post an update about WOW (Week Of Welcome) and what types of activities they are having this year.

See everyone in August!

Hey there, I'm Jennifer and I'm from Winooski with a whole lot of friends who go to UVM, not necessarily in the class of 08 though. I'm at Lyndon State College up in the middle of NOwhere....but I wanted to check this out.
I started a community of people too (just barely, there's not much...) but I hope something happens.

[21 Mar 2005|04:02pm]

youdresdendoll
hey UVM!!

i am currently a freshman at Boston University and i HATE it. I never thought about applying to UVM because i did a summer course there two years ago and it was horrible. Everyone was so preppy and stuck up and my roomate was a chronic masturbater, no joke. However, i think that the people that go to camp at UVM and the people that actually go to college at UVM are totally different. I know I only have about 10 days left to apply as a trasnfer student but I don't think I will be able to handle another year at BU (so i can finish CGS, a two year college). I don't having to walk over the highways to get to class and the lack of a campus. i miss the trees and the grass :( However, i LOVE my roommate and the one friend i have managed to make amoung the thousands of students here. Are the people at UVM more laid back than the typical BU student? How is the campus life? I probably have tons of more ?'s but none come to mind at the moment...heh...if anyone would be interested in IMing me i would really appreciate it :) my sn is yourvixenvomits and my name is Jenna. thanks :)

Just to let you know... [18 Aug 2004|01:27am]

[ mood | awake ]

Anyone who is a member of this community has posting access. This means that you don't have to depend on comments to talk to each other. Feel free to post here whenever you want. I don't want to be the only one posting lol.

On a different note, is anyone planning on going to the Dane Cook show on Sept 6th? I am a huge fan of him and I am totally excited that he'll be coming to UVM for a comedy show! I can't believe that tickets are only ten dollars.

Hello! [29 Jul 2004|02:32pm]

helgawurm
Hi, name is Julie, and I will be your mod!

I was just wondering if any of you ordered that book that lists all the freshmen and their interests, and if you did, did you receive it yet?

Also, did any of you get your housing assignments yet? Mine came in the mail today. I'm going to be in the Living/Learning Center. How about you? I still don't know who my roommate is yet, though.
